2025 POTY Tournament Results

Congratulations to Jim Pepping, the 2025 POTY Tournament Champion.  This sort of seems fitting since Jim will be leaving the club next year and now gets to walk away as a champion.

SMGA gave back and paid out half the field, the top 18 players, along with deuce pots and gross and net skins each day.

See attached PDF winners for results for each day and the overall top 18 winners.

Hot Days & Hot Putting

5-12-2023

The weather as well as the putting were hot during the first SWGC & SMGA mixed, double elimination, scramble putting tournament. It was a great turnout and atmosphere, with beer/wine refreshments served to the participants and music pumped in over the clubhouse speakers. Both the double elimination putting contest and the consolation progressive putting contest kept everyone busy for the afternoon. Some great battles with the final putt determining several of the matches.

But as with every contest there are winners, and Todd Swenddal & Alicia Crowe took 1st place by fighting off a comeback surge by Allen & Leanne Lacey from the loser’s bracket.

Again, it was a great outing, and we hope we can do this again in the fall.,

SHOW ME THE MONEY

Chris Bretz is happy to “Show You The Money” by fanning his winnings from the Seville sponsored 2023 Hole-In-One contest. Chris made the only hole-in-one during the Seville Shootout on Hole #10. He won $3800 for that single stroke. But he brought home a bit less as I understand that he was a very gracious host at the Grove after the contest. Nice job Chris!

2022 SMGA Player of the Year

The top 40 SMGA point leaders competed in the two-day net competition on Friday and Saturday 12-2 and 12-3 to determine the POTY Champion. This is the culmination of a full year’s worth of Saturday SMGA Saturday Event competitions. The weather was typical Arizona weather on Friday but rained during most of the second day of competition. The second day’s scores and soggy players reflected the difficult playing conditions, with only two players shooting below their handicaps.

Congratulations to Eric Wagner for winning the SMGA 2022 Player of the Year Tournament with a net two-day score of 143! Chris Bretz and Bill Linck were both two strokes back at 145 for a second place tie.

Two other honors that are earned from the year’s competition are the Point’s Leader and the Ironman awards. Jason Kujanson was Points Leader – Awarded to the member that earned the most points during the season. Rick Wagner was Iron Man – Awarded to the member who played the most POTY events during the season.

2nd SMGA Double-Elimination Putting Contest (11-4-2022)

On Friday afternoon 32 players competed in our 2nd double-elimination, match-play putting contest on the Seville practice putting green. There were nine holes set up on the winner’s bracket side of the green and five holes on the loser’s bracket side of the green. The weather was beautiful, and the competition was stiff.

Congratulations to the 1st place winner Rob Spears, and the 2nd place winner John McAvay. Rob won his first two matches before getting beaten in round 3 by Paul Schiefelbein. Rob then proceeded to win his way back through the loser’s bracket, beating Schiefelbein in the loser’s bracket final, and then beating John McAvay twice (the winner of the winner’s bracket) for the championship title.

1st Place Rob Spears $450
2nd Place John McAvay $225
3rd Place Paul Schiefelbein $135
4th Place Sean Stecker $90

Great outing. Lots of positive comments. We will continue to set up these putting contest every 3-4 months.

NEW COURSE CLOCK

After a lot of hard work and several years of collecting money from tournaments, an idea that started years ago has finally come to be.  A new, 12 ft tall, four-faced, Electric Time Company course clock has been installed at Seville in the area between the three practice facilities.  Besides being a great aesthetic addition, situating the clock in the practice area will allow golfers to be easily aware of the time.  No more going back to your bag to check your phone or asking another member the time as your tee time approaches.  The clock was strategically rotated so that one of the clock faces would be visible to anyone on the putting green, the chipping green or the broad area of the hitting range.  The time on the clock is synchronized by satellite and beautifully lights up the area at night. This clock was generously gifted to the Seville Members in a collaboration between the Seville Men’s Golf Association and the Club.

Inaugural SMGA Match Play Putting Contest

4-29-2022

“Can’t believe I three-putted one hole.” That seemed like the common statement coming from the losers of the 1st SMGA Match Play Putting Contest. Friday afternoon saw 32 players compete in a double-elimination, match-play putting contest on the Seville practice putting green. There were nine holes on the winner’s bracket side of the green and five holes on the loser’s bracket side of the green.

Congratulations to the 1st place winner Mike Welton, and the 2nd place winner Mike Grassel. Mike Welton worked his way through most of the winner’s bracket before getting beat in round 4 by Mike Grassel. Welton then proceeded to win his way back through the loser’s bracket and come back to beat Mike Grassel twice (the winner of the winner’s bracket) for the championship title.

1st Place Mike Welton $400
2nd Place Mike Grassel $250
3rd Place Kevin Lawrence $110
4th Place Jerry Coady $90
5th/6th Place Frank Merlo $70
5th/6th Place Tim Pokorney $70

Everyone seemed to enjoy the outing and the beer, so the SMGA will consider making this a quarterly event.

2022 Seville Hole-in-One Shootout

Congratulations to Mark Ewing for a Hole-in-One during the 2022 Seville Hole-in-One Shootout. There were 59 competitors and Mark pulled in $2360 for the ace on Hole #7. Looks like he thoroughly enjoyed the tournament payout and the side bets from the group in which he played.

2021 Player of the Year Tournament Winner

Congratulations to John Hornacek for winning our 2021 Player of the Year Tournament. The top 40 SMGA Saturday Event point leaders competed in this 2-day tournament with John finishing the tournament in first place with a net 140, or 4 under par.

Omar Daal finished one stroke back for second place and third place went to Matt Walsh.

Congratulations to all who qualified and played. It was a great tournament with perfect weather and course conditions.
